What is modem?
A modulator-demodulator. An electronic device that allows computers to
communicate over the telephone wires or cable TV cable. One of the modem
converts the digital signals(which
cannot be sent over telephone lines effectively)
into analog signals (which may be).

Modulation:
Insertion of carrier on data
Demodulation:
Removing the carrier from data
